Time is a strange teacher. It does not carry textbooks, require classrooms, or hand out examination papers. Yet the lessons it teaches leave the deepest marks on our lives. As we grow older, we begin to understand that life’s greatest truths are not written in books but carved into the hard walls of reality.
At different stages of life, our beliefs, dreams, and perspectives evolve. There was a time when I believed that studying hard was the key to achieving something meaningful in life. I thought that excellent grades, higher education, and prestigious degrees were the golden keys to success. I believed that acquiring knowledge would naturally lead to wealth, respect, and the life I dreamed of. Over time, however, I realized that reality is far more complex than I had imagined.
There is no doubt that education is important. It teaches us how to think, broadens our perspective, and helps us earn respect in society. However, there is no guaranteed relationship between education and financial success. Around the world, there are countless individuals with little formal education who have achieved remarkable financial prosperity. At the same time, there are highly educated people who struggle every day to meet their basic needs.
This reality raises an important question: What truly defines success? Is it education, intelligence, hard work, or luck?
My experiences have taught me that success is never determined by a single factor. Hard work is undoubtedly essential, and there is no substitute for it. Yet it is equally true that the same level of effort does not produce the same results for everyone. Some people spend years working tirelessly without reaching their desired destination, while others encounter opportunities that transform their lives within a relatively short period of time.
As a child, I came across a proverb that roughly translates to, “The one blessed with fortune rules the kingdom.” At the time, it seemed like a simple saying. Today, it feels like a reflection of reality. Life has shown me that many capable and deserving people fall behind because opportunities never arrive at the right moment, while others advance rapidly because circumstances align perfectly in their favor.
Recognizing the role of luck does not diminish the value of hard work. On the contrary, hard work forms the foundation upon which future possibilities are built. Luck may present opportunities, but preparation, skill, and perseverance are what allow people to make the most of them.
There have been moments in my life when success felt close enough to touch, yet somehow remained beyond my reach. It felt like a traveler in the desert chasing the illusion of water, only to discover it was a mirage. Dreams can sometimes feel the same way, visible before our eyes yet frustratingly out of reach.
Still, life is not meant for endless complaints. Life is about moving forward. Failure, disappointment, and unfulfilled desires are all part of the journey. They are not the final destination. Human beings survive on hope and advance through faith. What seems unattainable today may become reality tomorrow. The failures of today may be laying the foundation for tomorrow’s success, even if we cannot yet see it.
Time has taught me another valuable lesson: success cannot be measured solely by wealth or material possessions. Some of life's greatest treasures cannot be counted in a bank account. Patience, experience, self-respect, inner strength, and the ability to keep moving forward despite adversity are among the most valuable assets a person can possess.
Today, I am still walking my path. Perhaps slowly, perhaps with tired feet, but I have not stopped. I believe that just as every night eventually gives way to dawn, every period of waiting, struggle, and uncertainty is eventually followed by light. We do not know when it will arrive, how it will appear, or what form it will take. But if we abandon hope, hard work, and perseverance, we also abandon the possibility of finding that light.
Life may never answer all of our questions. Yet with time, it teaches us one profound truth: the journey itself matters more than the destination. It is not our achievements or disappointments that define us, but the experiences we gather along the way. Those experiences shape our character, deepen our understanding, and make us who we are.
And perhaps that is why, despite all its challenges, uncertainties, and unanswered questions, life remains beautiful.
